Since their humble beginnings in 1981, Pugh Computers Ltd have grown to become one of the UK’s leading suppliers of software licensing, hardware solutions and professional services to the education, voluntary and commercial sectors. They now employ 20 members of staff and are always expanding. Their journey has been a fascinating one!

Pugh started off selling Panasonic Computers with 8-inch floppy disks and Dragon 32 Computers with FarmFax software. At the time, these were innovative technology solutions. Soon, they moved into distributing RPS Magnetic Media, before forming a strong relationship with Microsoft in the mid-80s. Since then, Pugh have seen many different eras of technology, from floppy disks, CDs, DVDs, digital downloads, the birth of the internet and finally to today’s cloud-based solutions.

The move to the cloud has been driven by the need for users to be able to connect and collaborate from anywhere, on any device, at any time. The progression to such an easy and efficient way of accessing business systems has opened a whole new world of productivity for users. The benefits of cloud solutions are extraordinary and are being realised more than ever during the difficult times we currently find ourselves in.

Recently, businesses have been forced to make radical changes to the way they and their staff operate. We are seeing people’s attitudes changing. We are seeing a rise in remote working and learning. We are seeing more flexible working. All of this is enabled by the cloud services that are an integral part of today’s modern workplace.

Pugh’s mission over the past few years has not only been to provide these effective modern workplace solutions to their customers, but also to adopt these themselves. Such solutions are currently being used by Pugh to allow their entire workforce to work from home with no disruptions.

Nobody knows exactly what the next era of technology will be or when it will happen, but history suggests that Pugh will certainly be up for the challenge!

Jeffrey Pugh

Pugh Computers Ltd Managing Director & Founder

It’s great to look back at our journey over the past 40 years. It’s also very pleasing to see how well the company has adapted to each transition through the various technology eras. The modern cloud services we are delivering today are a far cry from the original tapes and floppy disk systems! It really is a true testament to the hard work of all our staff and partners over these years.

We have developed a real community feel at Pugh, with all our staff being from the local area. We also like to give something back to the community whenever we can, from sponsoring local clubs to providing career opportunities. Our technology skills and expertise have also enabled us to help local schools, charities and businesses get set up for remote working and learning, which is especially important given the current difficult period we are all facing.

As well as the company’s success, last year, I was very proud and honoured to have been awarded the IoD Wales Director of the Year SME award and went on to be highly commended in the national IoD awards. Our long-serving Technical Director Eifion Evans was also a finalist for the Best Tech Leader at the Wales Tech Awards. It’s very rewarding to see our hard work recognised at such prestigious events!

The EGO® in “Aberystwyth & Aberaeron EGO®” stands for Economic Growth Opportunity and we believe that the magazine helps stimulate economic growth in both towns and their surrounding areas by encouraging people to spend their money locally. We also hope our name suggests that Aberystwyth and Aberaeron should have more of an ego and shout a lot louder about what they have to offer! At the EGO® we believe that Aberystwyth and Aberaeron punch well above their weight, and should be proud of doing so.

Don’t settle for less when working or learning from home!

Last updated:1st May 2020
By now, most of us are settled into some sort of work from home routine. At the beginning, it’s a case of getting things done, even if results aren’t quite up to your usual standards. It’s about compromising, and this is generally acceptable given the difficult circumstances. Then as time goes on, you start to want more...
