Microsoft Welsh Windows and Office

Microsoft and the Welsh Language Board collaborated to create Welsh LIP (Language Interface Packs) kits in response to the Welsh Assembly Government's aspirations to create a bilingual Wales where people can choose to live their lives through Welsh, English or both. The Welsh LIP kits were translated by Caernarfon-based Cymen working with Draig Technologies and the University of Wales.

What does all this mean?
This means that you can now use Microsoft Office 2003 and Microsoft Windows XP in Welsh. Menus and options you see will be in Welsh. There’s a free Welsh Spellchecker for Microsoft Office 2003 and even easy keystrokes to get the circumflex - even on 'w' and 'y'.

Will users be able to use both English and Welsh, or only one language at a time? Can you switch the language easily?
The Microsoft Office 2003 language interface pack will allow users to switch easily between Welsh and English. The Windows XP Welsh language pack is not switchable.

So can I install the Language Interface Packs (LIPs) separately or do I have to have both?
No problem. You can choose to install either or both of the Windows & Office LIPs independently. The Welsh language experience will be more complete, however, with both.

Who is involved in this project?
Microsoft and the Welsh Language Board have formed a partnership and contracted Cymen (a translation company based in Caernarfon) and Draig Technologies (a Bangor-based IT company) to undertake the language and technical aspects of the translation respectively. Terminological work was undertaken by Canolfan Bedwyr of the University of Wales, Bangor. The project was managed by the Welsh Language Board and Microsoft.
